Overview

The Rocket Espresso Giotto Cronometro R Stainless Steel is a sophisticated heat-exchange espresso machine that features a remarkably quiet rotary pump and the convenient option to be plumbed directly into a water line, effectively bypassing the reservoir and eliminating constant trips to the sink. The “Cronometro” version of the Giotto is distinguished by its discreetly hidden shot timer, positioned just above the power switch. This digital readout seamlessly appears when the pump is activated and vanishes when it’s off, blending elegantly with the stainless steel housing, maintaining its refined aesthetic.

Features and Performance

Rocket was among the first to incorporate a PID controller into their heat exchanger machines, a testament to their commitment to innovation, and a feature that has since become an industry standard on high-end HXs. The PID is cleverly hidden behind the drip tray so as not to distract from the machine’s intricate design, and it can be precisely adjusted across four settings to accommodate different roast styles, allowing for optimal flavor extraction.

Enhanced E61 Group and Dual Pre-Infusion

Rocket is also one of only a handful of to make specific enhancements to the classic E61 group head. This group head circulates water from the boiler through the group to aid in temperature stability, and remains a staple on most prosumer machines for its robust performance. Rocket has integrated a sophisticated dual pre-infusion system, consisting of a mechanical working piston which works progressively within a static pre-infusion chamber. This design ensures fully saturated, crema-rich extractions, consistently yielding superior results. The PID controller meticulously keeps brew water temperature stable to the degree, and, once combined with this thoughtfully redesigned group, the Giotto Cronometro R is exceptionally equipped to deliver super consistent shots. While it’s a subtle change, we’re particularly fond of the blackened gauges on the Cronometro R version, as we believe it enhances the impression that this is a lean, mean, brewing machine.

Robust Internal Components and Convenient Features

Internally, the Giotto Cronometro R is similar to its Cronometro V counterpart. It houses a large 1.8 L copper boiler and a powerful 1200 watt heating element. Integrated sensors diligently monitor both the boiler and reservoir levels for low volumes, alerting you and, if necessary, automatically shutting off the machine to prevent the boiler from running dry. Of course, plumbing the machine directly into a water line eliminates this problem altogether and allows you to use an inline filtration system to purify water, further enhancing espresso taste and machine longevity. The Cronometro R also features the same convenient height-adjustable feet and cool-touch, no-burn steam wands as its counterpart.

Why You Should Get It

One of our favorite aspects of Rocket machines is the quality of their included accessories; they include a comprehensive full-color training guide, complete with a USB thumb drive containing extra content. Furthermore, rather than providing a flimsy plastic tamper, Rocket includes a high-quality branded metal tamper, ensuring you’re always ready to brew like a pro right out of the box. The Giotto Cronometro R is, in a word, gorgeous. It’s a standout addition to any home barista’s setup and promises to deliver exceptional performance for years to come. If you prefer a more traditional look with a flat body style, the Mozzafiato Cronometro R offers all the same great features. However, if you require even greater capacity and power, the dual boiler R58 stands as an excellent step up.
